Inspiring work

We are looking for a motivated and inspirational Designer with a contemporary (international) practice in which innovative research methods are being used. As Design tutor you will be part of an interdisciplinary team and teach within the existing MA Graphic Design programme. You will bring along a vision on design-research and will take a leading role in the innovation trajectory on both the educational profile and its adhering curriculum for a research-led Design programme. In this position you will be a core tutor on the master programme, developing the innovation trajectory, as well as a researcher at CARADT (Centre of Applied Research for Art, Design & Technology at Avans University of Applied Sciences). This is a highly ambitious and versatile Masters programme in a stage of development and growth, where there is an emphasis on interdisciplinarity and collaboration within our existing courses. Design practice and theory are co-taught, encouraging dialogue in relation to current social issues and civic urgencies that are relevant today, where the role of design is valued as a key tool for social change. We are committed to supporting ambitious and diverse context specific and situated research interests and approaches.

Drawing on the research pathways of the Professors at CARADT, our programme content advocates the greater embedment of art & design practices in society, where our research connects to six thematic currents in the field:

  • De-colonizing the art school & migrant aesthetics
  • Heterodox identities (gender)
  • Economics of production (indebtedness)
  • Emerging technologies (the ethical dimension of Big Data)
  • Ecological Sustainability (Anthropocene)
  • Gentrification (Creative Industries)

Perfect Match

You should be a designer with experience of teaching and able to bring creativity, skill, enthusiasm to the delivery of this programme, to support curriculum development and delivery, and add to the evolving research profile of our team.

You will have strong experience of contemporary design and be familiar with theoretical and practical approaches to current social issues and able to develop knowledge frameworks that understand our entanglement with environmental, social and cultural factors. You must be able to facilitate a high-quality learning environment, communicate a broad range of practical and theoretical design issues through hands-on teaching, workshop activities, lectures and seminars. You must be able to inspire and motivate students, to design activities appropriate at master level, and demonstrate experience of educational and administrative management.

You will have a Masters degree, recent experience of HE teaching, and detailed knowledge of contemporary research and theoretical issues within the wider field of Design, as well as a developing research profile or professional innovative practice. The ability to demonstrate direct experience of one or more of the design fields would be an advantage.

The candidate we are seeking will have the knowledge, vision and industry network to build the department with the team and develop new opportunities within the discipline.
