Education and Work Experience

Petr van Blokland is the owner, together with Claudia Mens, of Buro Petr van Blokland + Claudia Mens. The studio was founded in 1980 and works in cooperation with employed designers and a network of participants per project. 

Van Blokland graduated cum laude from the Royal Academy of Arts in The Hague and studied Industrial Design at Delft University of Technology. He specializes in corporate identities, web applications, typography, type design, designing the design process, design automation, online applications and websites, developing software tools for designers, design theory and live design games. 

He has lectured in the Department of Graphic Design at the Academy of Arts in Arnhem (1984 – 1989), the Department of Graphic Design (1988 – 2011) and the Type & Media Master’s programme (1998 – present) at the Royal Academy of Arts in The Hague, as well as in the Bachelor’s and Master’s Departments of Graphic Design at AKV|St.Joost in Breda (2010 – present). He was co-founder, owner and CTO of The Health Agency, a publisher for online health information, from 2001 to 2006. 

Van Blokland received the Charles Peignot Award for Typography from ATypI, the Association Typographique International, in 1988 and was a board member from 1996 to 2003. He has developed design games at various art schools in the Netherlands, Bremen, Copenhagen, Vienna, Thessaloniki, Dubai, Aveiro, Saarbrücken and Urbino, and during conferences such as Typo Berlin and ATypI Lissabon. Since 1998 he has also worked on assignment for various corporations.

Van Blokland publishes regularly in Items and BNO Vormberichten. Alongside lecturing, his current focus is on international projects related to typography and type design. He is also the co-founder of webtype.com and typenetwork.com, for which many type design tools were developed. These websites are also the location of his type foundry TYPETR.
